Sometimes, every bunny needs somebunny. A lot of owners may question whether they should adopt one rabbit or two (and in some cases even more than that!) but we think that making sure your rabbits have another friend who speaks the same language as them is the best option for their happiness.

Reason 1

In the wild rabbits live harmoniously in large warrens, and this need for a friend has transferred into domestic rabbits’ lives too! They are very sociable animals and can easily get bored or lonely if they are left alone for too long.

Reason 2

Although a very strong bond can be made between a human and a rabbit, it can never quite be on the same level as a bond between two rabbits. Bonded rabbits will be together at all times; playing, grooming and eating together. Even playing with your rabbit for a few hours every day cannot give them the great amount of attention a constant companion can offer.

Reason 3

As boredom is a common symptom of loneliness, a bunny without a friend is more likely to start destroying your furniture to fill their time! As a pair of bunnies are more likely to be calmer and happier, they are often easier to care for and less likely to get into trouble.

Reason 4

Once you’ve seen how inseparable your rabbits have become you will be extremely happy to see the difference a having best friend can make to your bun. Although bonding can be a difficult task in some cases, when it is successful it is definitely worth the effort once you’ve seen your bonded pair interact.

Reason 5

Rescuing both rabbits means that you can save and enrich the lives of two bunnies – something that’s always worth doing!

When pairing up two bunnies, don’t forget…

Neutering or spaying your bunnies can be a necessity for their future health, as well as keeping them calm so they are more likely to be friendly towards another bunny. Please remember not to keep two rabbits of the opposite sex together if they have not been neutered or spayed.

If you already have a rabbit and want to find their best friend, contact your local rescue centre for more help. They will be able to you find the perfect match for your pet – and you’ll be happy to know you get to bring up another rabbit!

Make sure you have enough space for both rabbits and their needs will be met. There isn’t much of a cost difference (outside of vet bills) between looking after one rabbit compared to two, but take this into consideration too so you know you can give your bunnies the best possible life.

Some pet owners become worried that getting another rabbit means the bond between them and their first rabbit won’t be as strong as it used to be. This isn’t something to worry about! Think about it this way – you wouldn’t love your first rabbit any less by having a second one.
